Marietta College’s Dr. Jacqueline Khorassani, Associate Professor of Economics, presented her paper “Using News Analysis in an Inverted Classroom,” at Robert Morris University.
The conference, “Teaching Economics: Instruction and Classroom Based Research,” was held on Feb. 18.
“The purpose of this paper is to describe how I use class time to engage students in various active learning exercises in my inverted Principles of Macroeconomic course,” Khorassani said.
Specifically, she describes how to use economic news to make economics more
relevant, interesting, and exciting to students. Her approach enhances students’ economic literacy and facilitates their ability to think critically as they build their own knowledge set.
“The cost of this approach is its lean content and (at least initially) student resistance—a cost that I am happy to endure,” she said.
